The Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma recently declared the Shikhana Jahwalao Forest as a National Park as per the decision of the Cabinet meeting. The total number of National Parks in Assam has increased to eight with the addition of Shikhna Jahwala. The National Park is located between Chirang and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. The Shikhna Jahwalao National Park covers a total area of 316 sq km. Assam is now the second largest national park after Madhya Pradesh.
Shikhna Jahwalao National Park :
The park is named after the Bodo hero Shikhana Jwalao. The national park is home to 81 species of reptiles and birds. The Chief Minister’s announcement has given the forests a new look after they were recognized as national parks. The National Park is located between Chirang and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. The Shikhna Jahwalao National Park covers a total area of 316 sq km.
According to a survey conducted by Jintu Sharma of Guwahati College in 2014, a total of 30 tree species (23 genera, 12 families), 7 rare, endangered, and threatened species (7 genera, 7 families), 8 orchid species (8 genera, Orchidaceous family), 6 wildlife, 10 birds, and 30 species of butterflies have been recorded in the Ultapani Forest Reserve.
